Due to my experience, you’ll hear me associate Magento with “huge learning curves” and many of you have said the same. So, I’m interested to know:
What do you wish you knew before you started your Magento project?
I’ll start…
For me, looking back all those years ago when I first started to use Magento, I wish I knew where to look for good help. Whether it be people, forums or articles. There were so many times when I felt out of my depth and isolated whenever I got stuck trying to build or fix something.
Many times, I’d end up following guides that were teaching me to “hack” a solution. Little did I know it was a “bad-practice” solution that would cause me huge headaches further down the line. Having said that, without making all those mistakes along my journey, I’d have nothing to learn from.
Magento is a huge learning curve - which I am certain they have set up on purpose to be a pain in the backside, especially when your used to things like Shopify/Woocommerce/EKM etc generally just working.
Having a clear plan with how you structure your site and product categories.
Choosing a hosting company wisely not cost effectively.
What I miss and what I think I need to know before starting our Magento project is:
I am a beginner with Magento and have studied M for some weeks now, but to me it is still unclear how to set up a multistore website in Magento. I don’t know where to start!
The definitions ‘‘website, store and storeview’’ also still puzzles me.
We have 1 company with different kinds of product lines, for each product line we would like to create a shop, but I really don’t know how to set this up.
We would like to create a multistore in magento like:
www.ourshops.com/shop1 (so each shop is a product line)
www.ourshops.com/shop2
www.ourshops.com/shop3
I would love to see a video from you about this topic!
I did not find one from you about this, or am I wrong?
I only found this: Homepage vs Store page
Definitely something I want to touch on in the next round of videos, @maggy .
Luckily, the way you want to do it doesn’t involve messing with Apache Configs to assign separate URLs.
The best way to visualise website, store and storeview in your case would be:
Website:ourshops.com
Store: shop1, shop2, etc…
Storeview: English, French, etc…
There’s a few people here with multi-stores, so if you have a specific question drop a new post and I’m sure someone can shed some more light in the interim.
I have been reading a lot about it now, and I think (not sure) what you want is more or less set up the same way as what I want. What you want is on Storeview level, what I want is about Store level and I understood there directories have to be created, index.php & .htaccess copied inside the new directory and symlinks to the Magento folders.
I am already puzzling with this for a while, but the explanations are all a bit vague and I am very unsure which description I read applies to how I want the shop to be (see my earlier post). Very unclear, so I still don’t know what to do. I read about lines being altered in Magento-files, but I want to be sure about what I am doing, I don’t want to change things blindly in Magento-files! (Yes, yes, back up, blabla, but I am not backing up every minute, therefor I want to be sure the steps I am following are the right ones).
I read that it is easier than the other ways to set up Magento, but nowhere a clear explanation and how-to can be found…
Abacadabra…
I hope Graig will put some (bright ) light on it soon!
