Introduce yourself (and your project)

Hello there,
My name is Hassen
and this is my first time using Magento
i currently finished installing 2.3 by reading and following your article Craig, great article by the way.
and my project is just trying to learn and understand magento and i want to do that within the next week or so.
I am kind of a developer
i learned everything except React and my JavaScript skills are horrible lol
just gotta keep practicing

Welcome @great,

Magento 2 is a beast. It’s super-powerful, but has a really big learning curve. There is plenty to learn. But both using and developing Mageto isn’t always about knowing the answer… It’s about having the skills to solve problems by knowing where to look.

If it was easy, Digital Startup wouldn’t exist. Good luck with your project :+1:

Hi, My name is Bill and I stumbled upon this site via your YouTube channel.

I used to work in the web industry, but haven’t completed any projects in almost 7 years. My brother is in need of an ecommerce site and so I’ve offered to help set him up a M2 site. It seems like a steep learning curve again, lol.

I hope to get plenty of use from your videos and other docs and contribute on the forums where I can.

Cheers,

Bill.

Hey @billyweb, welcome to the community

Regardless of the time it’s been since you were in the web industry, I’m sure it’ll all come back to you in no-time. You’re right, Magento comes with a steep learning curve but I’m sure you’ll pick it up quick enough.

I look forward to seeing you around in the forum.

Good luck with your project :+1:

Hey guys, moving over from a troublesome prestashop and admittedly still learning, currently struggling with phpmyadmin, I have followed the guide to a tee twice over now and keep hitting the same wall where logins wont work with phpmyadmin, basically chapter 4 in the guide https://digitalstartup.co.uk/magento/how-to-install-magento-23/

Any help would be most appreciated

Hi @hygiene, welcome to the community. I’m aware of Prestashop but I’ve never used it. So, I don’t quite know how it will compare to Magento 2. Anyway, your issue might be related to something I came across once when working in Ubuntu 18.04. My post and solution can be found here. If this doesn’t help, please feel free to create a new post with the details of your issues and what you’ve tried.

A post was split to a new topic: Cannot install Sample Data

Hi Craig!
I just come to say hi.
Your magento 2 tutorial video( How to install Magento 2.3 (from scratch) - Magento 2 Beginner Tutorials) is absolutely great.
I am personally an Java Developer and have zero knowledge of PHP or Magento.
But your video makes it very easy for me do everything i needed.

Hey @abhinav_aggarwal and welcome to the community.

I’m glad you found that video useful, it took a looooooong time to put together. I’m no coder myself, I just know enough to kinda get by

As a Java Developer you’ll probably pick things up pretty quickly. The trick with Magento coding is to develop modules as per the rule-book. It takes longer but results in more stability and future-proofing. There were too many shortcuts being made by 3rd parties and freelance developers in Magento 1 which ultimately lead to a lot of broken stores. So whatever you do learn, be sure to share your coding expertise

Good luck with your project.

Hi, my name is Fergus and we will be migrating from CS-Cart to Magento 2. We have used CS-Cart for over 5 years now and whilst it it a great, stable and easy to learn (compared to Magento) it is not not supported well in barcoding and warehouse management, which we now need to keep growing. We have a test site up with 4 TLDs & 2 currencies and are testing and learning. A huge thanks for your videos. We are leaning towards the Pearl theme from Welt Pixel bucause it includes a lot of their own extentions which presumably are either guaranteed to work out of the box or will be easily fixed. We would expect to be adding a lot of backend extentions, We intend trying to stick with no more than 4-5 extension developers.

HI @Fergus and welcome to the community.

Hopefully, the videos and this community can help make your integration a little less painful. I think everyone here will agree (including myself) that the learning curve is particularly steep at first.

I sounds like you have a decent plan for your Theme and extensions.

Best of luck with your project :+1:

Hi Craig,

My name is Dylan. I graduated as a software engineer in 2015 and worked for a software company for three years after that. My professional experience was mainly in Javascript/Typescript on NodeJS, HTML/CSS and Java for back-end coding. Besides that I’ve been building websites for a long time as a freelancer: back in the days just plain old HTML/CSS, then using Drupal and finally Wordpress. I’ve got some PHP programming experience with Laravel for a hobby project too.

Since last year I am working in a new family company doing (amongst other things) all IT related stuff  We currently sell goods in a B2B setting, but will soon also sell B2C. When looking for an e-commerce platform last year, I was looking into Magento 2 but felt overwhelmed by it at first. Since we needed something up and running quickly, I went with WooCommerce. But using WooCommerce in a B2B setting has its limits and doesn’t really feel right for the complexity we need.

So a while ago I was looking into Magento again and found Digital Startup. Seeing your videos was so relieving for me. I finally felt like: I can do this. So now this weekend I went in and started setting up a Magento 2 store on Nexcess using your “How to” series. Up till now, everything is going great. I still need to figure some things our since it will be a B2B site selling to different countries (VAT rules). And for the B2B functionality (baked into Magento Commerce now) I found this promising suite for the open source version that I’m going to try out:

When I’m finished with the project I’ll be sure to leave a review for this B2B Suite. Hope it works well

Thanks a lot for giving me the confidence to start this project, Craig!
Hope I can help others here in the future with my experience too.

Hey @dylankiss. Nice to have you with us an welcome!

My JS knowledge is trash, so it would be great to have someone around to ask questions if needed. Your new job sounds all too familiar. Being the I.T. guy that’s asked to do everything in a company from coding a website to designing letter heads

I appreciate your positive comments. Magento is such an overwhelming bit of kit and no one seems to have yet been able to onboard beginners. It’s like all documentation is written by Magento experts for Magento experts. Or assumes you’ve taken their courses/seminars costing thousands of dollars.

I’m glad I could help in some way. Feel free to post progress updates, reviews or anything like that. And you never know, in a couple of months time you’ll probably have experienced enough to help others here too!

Good luck with your project :+1:

Hello Craig. This is Mainer and I installed Magento2.2.5 after watching yours and http://creatingawebstore.com/magento-community-tutorials.html videos online. You both made Magento2 seem easy to install for any newbie. I have successfully installed Magento2 and the site is working well after few hiccups. I am waiting to hear your verdict on upgrade from 225 to 231.

I also am running into few issues with cron jobs. I will post separate posts for those queries.

Your site is invaluable for any Magento2 admin. Thank you for your insight.

Thanks
Mainer

Welcome, @Mainer!

I’m glad I was able to help you with your setup. I’m still working on more content, which should also help you in the future.

I’ve been so busy lately, I haven’t had time to invest in the 2.3.1 research. But I’m hoping I’ll find the time soon.

Enjoy your time on the forum and good luck with your project :+1:

HI Craig, thank you for the useful information in the videos.
My name is Tony and based in Perth WA… originally from UK.
Not sure what to do so I thought you may be a great place to start.
I want to build an Ebay store in Oz.
I have found a supplier which has an extensive range of products (around 5000) and I want to load them all up on my Ebay store/template.
I need to find someone who can scrape all the products off the website and download onto the ebay site through Magento (I assume I need Magento to communicate with Ebay).
I have a template designed but need the EBay store completed as well. My template contractor doesn’t know Magento so I need another person who can help me with this please? I was going to upload this job on Upwork but thought I would ask you first how to do this as your knowledge of Magento is invaluable I feel.
Thank you. Regards Tony.

Hi @Teecee and welcome to the community.

I get the question about turning Magento into an eBay/Amazon store frequently. Unfortunately, this isn’t the type of project that I’ve worked on before. And honestly, I don’t think anyone has yet achieved it. You would need to repurpose Magento quite significantly to achieve your goal because it’s not designed to work that way. I suspect you’d end up paying 5 figures or more to develop something like that.

You might find more support going with the Magento Commerce Edition and paying the annual license fee. It’ll open doors to experienced and forward thinking Magento Specialists that would definitely be able to support you. But you get what you pay for so it wouldn’t come cheap.

Good luck with your endeavor :+1:

Thanks Craig. I appreciate the feedback.

Hi Everyone!

My name is Tyler and I am trying to set up a Magento 2 store to sell OEM parts and accessories for a smaller niche motorcycle brand. My family has been in the motorcycle industry for 100 years now, but we really need to start selling online to join the times. I worked for my parents’ store for 11 years before I left to attend medical school. I am currently in my second-year of medical school at a California university.

I have no previous experience with Magento or with coding which is making this a bit of a struggle. I chose Magento only because it is the only platform that I can integrate the OEM parts finder and my accessories together in the same cart using an extension. If I use something like Shopify, then the OEM parts would be added to a separate shopping cart than the accessories. I would also ideally like to integrate a year/make/model search extension as well. So far I have setup my server using Cloudways, and have been going through the tutorial videos and configuring my store settings.

I recently talked to a developer who was very discouraging. He said that without any coding knowledge Magento would be pretty impossible for me to do on my own. So I wanted to come to the forum and get your guys’ opinion. Is this something I should even attempt? I don’t have very much, if any, startup money, so a small foreign development firm would be my only option besides not doing it myself. I am a bit discouraged, because I’m worried about my parents and their livelihood so I am really just trying to do something to help them and the store make some extra money. Any advice or help would be appreciated.

Thank you everyone, and especially Craig for all of your videos. They have been so helpful!

Hi Tony,
This post was a long time ago so I’m not sure if you’ve figured it out yet but have you looked into Channel Advisor? I used to use them and they were expensive at the time but they allowed you to import all of your products into their platform and then send them out to multiple marketplaces. I’m not sure if Magento was supported but I would imagine it is. Just a thought
