Magento Upgrade from 2.2.4 to Latest

Hello,

We are currently running version 2.2.4 and desperately need to upgrade to the latest version. We had a new admin account appear within our Magento so we suspect there are a number of vulnerabilities within this version.

Our theme does not support the latest version so we’ll need to install a new theme also. Can someone please advise the best steps to do this upgrade and avoid any downtime or data loss?

Would installing just a fresh copy of the latest version be best, install the plugins and new theme then copy over the SQL database? Is that even possible? Would errors occur as there will be tables within the database looking for the old theme?

Sorry, in a bit of a pickle and need to start outlining the best and fastest way forward.

Many thanks

Hi MWesty,
You need to hire someone that has M2 programming and/or deployment skills.
I would expect a minimum of 20 hours of work to do an upgrade from 2.2.4 to 2.4.

Have your developer do this in a staging area first, test that everything is working, and redo it in production.

Plan for a failed conversion, what is your plan in case it doesn’t go as planned.

Happy New Year, and good luck with your conversion.

The easiest way would be to fall back to the Luma theme, then upgrade to 2.2.8

From there, follow this guide:

Once you’re on 2.3.1 it should be a trivial upgrade to 2.3.6 if I recall correctly.

Do this all on a staging area, don’t do this on your live environment. It’s a big job.
