Maintenance Mode for Multi Store

I hope someone can help, I am going round in circles trying to find the answer to this.

I have a multi website setup on Magento 2.2.6, is there any way to put one site in maintenance mode with the other still being active? I have seen there are modules available to do this but was hoping for a simpler solution.

To the best of my knowledge, Maintenance Mode effects Magento as a whole. Therefore, you can’t put it in place for each store. Normally, if you were to use Maintenance Mode then you’re running an Install/Upgrade/Backup with effects everything anyway.

Thanks Craig, that is a pity as I need to do some work on just one site. I might try a module and see how they work.
